"We ought to despise the kindly disposition of men and of emperors if to propitiate them means not only that we have to commit murders and acts of licentiousness and savagery, but also that we have to blaspheme the God of the universe or make some servile and cringing utterance, alien to men of bravery and nobility who, together with the other virtues, wish to possess courage as the greatest of them. Here we are doing nothing contrary to the law and word of God." (Con. Cel. VIII,64)

Exceptions to God's love? A thought on violence and salvation, Anabaptists, Yoder, Barth and Luther

"Anabaptists" being tortured for rejecting violence and saying that there will be an end to otherworldly torture. In the Lutheran Augsburg Confession (CA) the so-called Anabaptists were condemned not just for their baptist practices but also for their views on eschatology, soteriology and ethics. First there is the Anabaptist rejection of violence. The Lutherans condemned the Anabaptists for teaching the necessity of not engaging as soldiers in “just war”, to “sit as judges” and to award “just punishments”. ”They condemn the Anabaptists who forbid these civil offices to Christians.” (CA § XVI) On soteriology we hear that Lutherans believe that the devil and sinners shall be tortured without end, while the Anabaptists are condemned for teaching that there will be an end to torture: ”They condemn the Anabaptists, who think that there will be an end to the punishments of condemned men and devils.” (CA § XVII) While the claim that there will be an end to punishments...

"Herren er Liv. Ifølge Apostlen vil Kristus forbinde sig med Faderen med hele sit legeme, når han engang overgiver riget til Gud. Kristi legeme består i sin helhed af menneskets natur, hvormed Kristus er forenet. Paulus kan af samme grund omtale Kristus som formidler mellem Gud og mennesker. Han, som er i Faderen, men som har levet blandt mennesker, træder frem mellem Gud og mennesker. Kristus forener hele menneskeheden med sig selv, og gennem sig selv med Faderen. Det kommer til udtryk i evangeliet, når Herren siger: ”Du, Fader, er i mig, og jeg er i dig, for at de må være ét i os”. Ifølge evangeliets løfter, er vi ikke længere Herrens slaver, men som forligt med Gud, regnes vi blandt hans venner. Ikke desto mindre skal Kristus herske ”indtil han har lagt alle sine fjender under sine fødder”.
